Conversation at work:
I: So why do Greek Orthodox pray to saints?
V: We don’t, we only pray to the holy trinity!
I: So why do you have saints then??
V: An example: Saint Nicholas is the protector of sailors.
I: Ah, so they are more like angels, protecting you from things, but if you are really in trouble you pray to God.
V: Yes, it would be quite ridiculous to pray to Saint Nicholas when you are about to drown. Of course you pray to God in that situation. But we do have the tradition where, on your name day, you kiss the portrait of the saint that shares your name.
I: That sounds totally ridiculous!
V: I know but that’s how it is in every church. Don’t you do things that are kind of crazy too?
I: (thinking intently) No, I can’t come up with anything!
V: But when you pray you…
I: ???
V: You do the cross-sign, don’t you!
I: No we don’t
V: But you sing in church. To me that would be totally crazy.
I: What! You don’t sing in church??
V: No, no instruments are allowed.
I: But it says in the Bible that they sang and danced in front of the Lord!
V: So you dance in church as well? What do you do when you go out clubbing then?
I: We dance of course
But it’s a bit different to dance in front of God…
V: Well if you want to hear music you just go to the tavern! It would be ridiculous if someone would take out a mandola and start playing in church!
I: Ha that’s so strange! You should definately come to my church for some cultural exchange
